Real World Analogue: A 1969 Woman's Weekly interview with Cleary states, "A young Australian pop star was off to England to try his luck, and there he was surrounded by hundreds of squealing fans, reporters, photographers, and TV cameras. The TV kept zooming on to the faces of his parents, who stood a little away, looking totally bewildered by the whole thing."
Given the timescale, this may well have been Normie Rowe, a hugely popular act in Australia, but who never achieved a breakthrough in the UK, despite spending the years 1966-68 based in the country. Cleary goes on to say that he spent six weeks on the road with a band, during which time he developed "haemorrhoids of the eardrums". Sadly, he doesn't reveal which band this was, but the name of the arranger, Ron Richards, suggests it may have been The Hollies.
What is perhaps clearer is that Norval's manager Brian Boru O'Brien is very much in the Andrew Loog-Oldham mould.
